Practitioners consider chi quong, also known as chi gung, chi kung or qi gong, as a way to clear out the mental, physical and emotional blockages impeding the flow of your qi -- or energy -- and diminishing your vital life force. Advocates say that through exercises, breathing techniques and mental focus, qi can be manipulated for your greatest benefit. Practice qi gong exercises daily to reduce stress, build mental and physical strength and increase your energy.
Generating Waves of Energy
Like a lot of qi gong exercises, Generating Waves of Energy ranges from beginner to advanced versions. For beginners, place your feet at least shoulder-width apart and relax your knees in what is known as Horse Stance. Let your arms hang by your sides. Slowly lift your heels off the floor until you are balancing on your toes. Immediately lower your heels back to the floor. Continue the maneuver eight more times. For a slightly more advanced workout, come into Horse Stance and bend at your waist until your back is parallel with the floor. Stretch your arms forward, and open your palms facing down. As in the beginner's version, raise and lower your heels, but very rapidly. Continue until you become fatigued.
Touching the Earth
When your qi flows unimpeded, you feel vital. When it's blocked you don't feel quite right. Touching the Earth is a grounding qi gong exercise thought to facilitate the flow of qi in your lower torso and legs. Stand at relaxed attention with your feet together. Inhale and raise your arms in front of you, then up until they are hovering above your head. Do a slight back bend, then exhale, slowly lower your arms and bend forward until your hands touch the floor. Bend your knees if you have to, and continue on for eight more rounds.
Looking for Hidden Treasure
Just like the flow of qi itself, Looking for Hidden Treasure should be performed in a smooth, continuous manner. Step your feet slightly wider than shoulder-width apart. Bend your knees to a 45-degree angle and place your hands on your upper thighs. Bend forward from your waist until your back is flat and parallel to the floor. Inhale and raise your torso up and toward the right. Press down into your left thigh with your left hand to facilitate the twist. Exhale and lower to the flat-back starting position, then inhale and twist up to the left. Continue in a flowing manner from side to side eight more times.
Separating Heaven and Earth
Qi will be dispersed through your middle torso as you practice Separating Heaven and Earth. Stand with your feet hip-width apart. Bring your hands in front of your lower abdomen with the left palm facing up and the right palm facing down as if you were cradling a small ball between them. Inhale and raise your left arm toward the ceiling and lower your right arm toward the floor. Turn your left palm up and your right palm facing down. Exhale and then return your hands to the original position in front of your abdomen. Repeat on the opposite side, then eight more times in total.
