Power 90 is a home fitness program from Beachbody that brands itself as a "90-day in-home boot camp for total body transformation." The program combines cardio and strength training to improve your overall fitness. You'll need a very basic home gym that includes weights or resistance bands to do the workouts. Once you get the weights you'll need, you'll be prepared to start the program.

Type of Weights

You will only need to get your hands on dumbbells in order to do the Power 90 program -- there's no need for barbells or any other larger weights. This is ideal for a home workout program, as dumbbells are small and compact, meaning that you don't need a fully equipped home gym. Make sure your dumbbells come in pairs because many of the exercises require you to use a weight in each hand.

How Heavy

The "Power 90 Program Guide" recommends starting with weights as small as 3 pounds. It doesn't specify how much heavier any of your weights should be. It simply says they should go "as high as you want." Because every person is different, you'll want to try out the program with a few weights and adjust as necessary. Keep in mind that you will likely need to increase your weights as you gain strength and progress through the program.

Alternative to Weights

The Power 90 program gives you an alternative to weights: resistance bands. Resistance bands are elastic bands that you loop under your foot and pull up on in the same way that you would lift a weight. You can use any brand you want, but if you use Beachbody's B-Lines brand they recommend that women start with the pink band, which is equivalent to approximately 15 pounds of resistance, and that men start with the magenta band, which is equivalent to roughly 20 pounds of resistance. You can increase the resistance of your bands as you gain strength. The most resistance offered is from the black bands which are equal to about 50 pounds of resistance.

Other Equipment

In addition to weights or resistance bands you'll need a few other basic pieces of equipment to do your Power 90 workouts. The "Power 90 Program Guide" recommends having a floor mat to provide some cushioning when doing crunches and other floor exercises. If you already have a strong chest, you can use a pushup stand to challenge yourself more when performing pushups. Finally, you may want to invest in a heart rate monitor -- otherwise you will need to check your pulse manually during your workout.
